Remarks:
Atalanta is the original and prototype of the Atalanta production series of yachts built by Fairey Marine between 1956 and 1962. Designed as a lightweight scaled up dinghy with innovative accommodation and strong construction derived from aeronautical engineering. Named Atalanta after the last Flying Boat built by Fairey Aviation she was an exceptional boat for her time and contributed significantly to the explosion in yachting in the late 1950’s and 1960’s with 187 larger production Atalanta 26’s being made as well as a further 80 derivative designs.
By 2014 she had deteriorated significantly and in 2016 the current owner, knowing that she was a unique and one-of-a-kind prototype and needing to be saved, began a three year intensive restoration of her that involved every inch of her hull and all of her equipment. Many of her fittings are unique with the design having been modified for the production Atalantas, but all have been diligently restored or replaced. At the end of her restoration, the current owner was nominated for the 2019 Classic Boat Awards - Under 40ft with an article being written about her for ‘Classic Boat’. (See photographs of the article)
Atalanta is now in great condition and having proven herself throughout her sailing life with trips around the South and East coats of England, cross-channel trips, coastal cruising and creek-crawling, all whilst still delivering the original Fairey Marine intent of safe, comfortable cruising.
The centre cockpit provides a secure home at sea with all lines easily to hand. The novel twin lifting keels keep the accommodation space clear and the vertical whipstaff tiller does the same for the cockpit. She has comfortable accommodation for three across the fore and aft cabins, with the fourth berth now a spacious galley since her restoration.
Atalanta is a rewarding sail and can be trailed to any cruising location of your choice with her twin axle trailer. Being such a wonderful example of a restored maritime classic she is sure to turn heads and start many conversations wherever you go.
