Remarks:
In excellent order throughout, this Broads One Design still has her original full-length mahogany planking! Professionally maintained by one of the best boat builders on the Broads, she has been re-decked in recent times, and comes complete with a galvanised, braked road trailer which is also understood to be in excellent order. Originally commissioned by the Earl of Albemarle, she is one of two Brown Boats that sailed from Dover to Calais, returning a few days later, in 1956. Purchased by the current owner in December 2020 with the intention of class racing, this Broads OD is now unexpectedly for sale due to a change of plans. A really super example of the class!
MOORING: It’s understood that the vessel’s summer berth at Oulton Broad could be transferred to the purchaser if required.
Class history: Linton Hope, naval architect to the King of Belgium, designed the Broads One Design (Broads OD or BOD) at the request of members of the Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Club in 1900 with the aim of creating a yacht that was both capable of sailing inshore off Lowestoft, and also suited to sailing on the Broads. The first class race is recorded as having been held on Whit Monday 1901 at Oulton Broad. 31 boats were built in wood over a period of 38 years, with more being to added to the class since 1987 constructed in GRP. The class now numbers over 80 in total and remains very active today, with the design having proven itself to be both very safe and capable at sea, and very competitive when raced against other Broads classes. BODs are affectionately known as “Brown Boats” due to their beautiful varnished hulls.
